ENTRY: Portland Rose Festival Rose Sign

This iconic rose is installed on the roof of the new headquarters building for the Portland Rose Festival in the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. This rose is a beacon that establishes the connection with the organization and its new location. The challenge was to create a rose large enough to establish this connection, and a connective scale to the building. Ramsay Signs donated this rose as a gesture of goodwill to the City of Portland and the Portland Rose Festival Association.

The criteria for design were that the design needed to reflect the client's personality and to include an object from their childhood memory; it needed to create a lighting source for their entry with pleasing colors; it needed to be dimmable; and it needed to have a rustic, weathered patina. Based on these factors, I decided to create a Neon Cowboy much like the one at the State Fair in Dallas where the owner grew up. This is a faithful representation of 1940's sign design in paint as well as neon. The weathered patina looks convincingly authentic. It is reflective of POP ART.
